Opening doors for women
By Maricela Aranda Torres

In this world that is constantly evolving, the role of women has changed so that they have greater participation in society. Although countless paths of growth and development are now open for many, millions of women still have not seen the opportunity to break into the academic, scientific, political, artistic or economic realms. A combined effort of authorities and community members is required to open doors for these women.

ExpresArte Mujer developed from a private initiative called Motu Propio, which brings together several individuals and institutions interested in contributing to scientific and socio-cultural development. It is of special interest for women who attend, as they reflect on the situation of disadvantage over thousands of years which limited women’s access to knowledge, art and communication. The National Forum for Artistic Expression and Research: Expresarte Mujer requires the participation and collaboration of various agencies and bodies to reflect, research and take action to positively transform our reality.

Art, culture and science are the highest expressions of civilization through which humans have found a platform for social transformation and a space to express ideas and emotions and to sublimate our most primitive instincts. Science and art converge in this forum, providing a fertile field enriched by diversity. Science allows us a better understanding of cultural and psychological phenomena, both individual and social; on the other hand, artistic expression supports multiple cognitive functions, the development of creativity, and social and emotional intelligence.

Through participation in events dedicated to the improvement of women’s quality of life, tolerance and solidarity emerge. The diffusion and promotion of the arts within the country’s female population and investigation of women’s concerns lead us to achieve scientific and socio-cultural objectives. These accomplishments should be of great interest to the government and to agencies or institutions that share the same goals.

The capacity for fantasy is one of the most important features of a healthy personality. The elaboration of a work of art necessarily involves imagination, and it promotes mental representations useful for building consciousness. Also, redirecting impulses through the creative process fosters optimal emotional development.

A special reception and inauguration on Thursday at Instituto Allende kicks off a month-long exhibition dedicated to the situation of women. Stimulating the imagination through artistic expression within a group has positive effects for individuals, especially concerning creativity, and thus we believe that promoting an activity like this is essential to sound development in human society.
