Mero Arte Contemporaneo is proud to announce the inauguration of “Pushing Boundaries,” an exhibition of all new paintings by master encaustic painter Eschwan Winding. This exhibition celebrates the one year anniversary of the gallery under the stewardship of Michelle Wey and Joaquin Piñeiro, as well as the anniversary of Winding’s first solo exhibition at Mero Arte. “Pushing Boundaries” is so named because these new works demonstrate what can be achieved when an artist makes personal and creative growth a priority when choosing what and how to paint. Eschwans’ encaustic paintings of the past two years have been strictly abstract, ranging from sublimely subtle color field paintings with highly polished smooth surfaces to exhilarating, highly textured explosions of color. They were incredibly well received and served to cement her fame as one of the most gifted painters working in the highly laborious encaustic medium here in San Miguel.

Rather than rest on the laurels of her past successes, Eschwan has chosen to continue to challenge herself by charting a new and previously unexplored direction in her growth as an encaustic painter. She has returned to the human figure, using the encaustic medium. In the artists’ own words, “…in this series… I have aspired to convey the truth and beauty of the human form as I see it and to use the challenging technique of encaustic honestly in order to capture the sensuousness, and by the layering of the medium, capture the movement and sensitivity of the human form.” The result is startling. These are figurative works like no others. The brilliance of the colors and the almost sculptural quality of the texture of the paint surfaces, make these paintings come alive. They are at once beautiful, bold and sensual. They are sublime and masterful. They are not to be missed.

Mero Arte Contemporaneo proudly invites the art-loving San Miguel public to enjoy Eschwan Winding’s incredible new paintings, and to celebrate the gallery’s one-year anniversary on Saturday, June 16.
