Unitarian Universalist Fellowship April 18, 2008 San Miguel de Allende

Founder Donna Quathamer tells the story of Casa de Los Angeles, a free community center that serves the needs of the less fortunate at this Sunday’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Meeting.

Casa de Los Angeles currently serves 73 children from 52 families. Each family is required to participate in the life of the daycare center by giving one hour of service for each day their child is present. Ms. Quathamer will tell of the center’s struggles and successes, which includes the construction of a second center scheduled to open in the next month or so.

The UU Fellowship meets every Sunday at 10:30am at La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15.

Midday Rotary Club

On Tuesday April 22, we are pleased to have as our guest speaker psychiatrist, Oscar Canale, who will address us on the topic: “Mental Health Issues Faced by Today’s Mexican Immigrants to the United States.”

Dr. Canale is a native of Argentina and immigrated with his family to the United States as an adolescent. He attended medical school at Loma Linda University in Southern California and completed a residency in Psychiatry at Lutheran General Hospital in the Chicago area. Dr. Canale started his career working in a small residential private practice setting before moving on to work for a County Health Department in order to increase his work with Hispanic clients. Since December of 2005, he has been at an Illinois State Psychiatric Hospital working primarily with Hispanic inpatients.

The Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende-Midday meets every Tuesday at their new location, the Hotel Real de Minas at the intersection of Calle Ancha de San Antonio and Calle Sterling Dickinson. Check-in time is 12:00–12:25 and the meeting starts promptly at 12:30. For more information, please go to the website: www.rotarysma.org

Classes & Workshops

Chess workshops

Free chess workshops for adults meet Mondays 5–6:30pm in the central patio of the Biblioteca Pública. The Biblioteca has good chess sets, but bring your own if you like. More than a dozen players occupy the north portal of the patio each week. Some players meet in the patio informally other days of the week.

About 10 players gather at Mama Mia, Umarán 8, on Wednesdays, 5–7pm. The restaurant has tournament-class sets and spectacular views from the rooftop terraces of churches, mountains and sunsets.

Adults also play chess at Casa de la Cultura on Chorro, 10am–2pm on Saturdays, but play on April 19 has been postponed, resuming again on April 26. The view is extraordinary and you’ll earn it climbing the switchbacks on the road to the top of the hill.

Performances & Events

Shalom San Miguel to host Passover event

Passover is a joyous holiday, an eight-day observance commemorating the freedom and Exodus of the Israelites (Hebrew slaves) from Egypt during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II. The Seder, a ritual during which the story of Passover is retold, is the time when we learn, “Why is this night different from all other nights?” On the night of Seder, as well as all during Passover, there are special foods, songs and customs in which all participate.

Shalom San Miguel would like to welcome members of the community and visitors alike to celebrate with them the Second Night of Passover, April 20, at the Hotel Quinta Loreto. Dan Lessner will lead the service and a traditional Passover meal is planned. If required, a vegetarian meal may be ordered. Children are welcome. To make reservations, please call either Carole at 154-6760 or Doris at 154-5438. The cost is 250 pesos or US$25 for reservations received and paid for by April 13. After that time, guests will be charged 300 pesos or US$30.
