Jóvenes Adelante’s New Sponsorship Campaign Kicks Off with a Donation Meant to Motivate
By Don Krim
As we move into the holiday season, Jóvenes Adelante (JA) is thrilled to announce an anonymous holiday gift to JA of US$8,000 for each of five years, totaling US$40,000.
The donation is unrestricted, meaning the organization is free to use the funds for any purpose. “The unrestricted grant will go to our new Friends of Jóvenes Adelante Fund, designed for unrestricted use,” Executive Director Angie Argüelles said. “The board will choose to invest it in our new endowment fund or fund students or pay staff—whatever the board feels is the best use of the money.”
Equally exciting, the anonymous donor wants to encourage potential donors who might not be able to afford the US$1,600 per year cost of being a sponsor. To that end, the donor is offering a challenge grant for up to another US$4,000 per year—five new $800 “half” sponsorships—for each of five years, or a total of US$20,000.
“Unlike the unrestricted gift, the challenge grant is based on the organization securing pledges for up to five half-sponsorships for 2020 from anyone who is not already an active sponsor,” Argüelles explains. “The deadline for the challenge is Christmas Day, December 25. Merry Christmas, Jóvenes Adelante!”
New sponsors must pledge annual or monthly payments totaling US$800 for five years, and the anonymous donor will match those donations dollar-for-dollar each year, up to US$20,000. The sponsors of record will be assigned a student and receive all the benefits of sponsorship. Jóvenes Adelante never commits to a student until pledges are secured, so 2020 sponsorship initial payments must be made by the spring to coordinate with student selection of the new incoming class.
“I’m fortunate I can give back and hopefully in this way give an extra nudge to others to support this organization and its students,” the anonymous donor’s message said. “The greatest reward of being fortunate is looking around and deciding what means the most to me for the longer term prospects of San Miguel and its local communities. For me, that is education—it is a no-brainer. Open doors for these kids who work so hard to get so far on so little, and with a little added luck, they will succeed and prosper in constructive ways for their kids and families.”
Jóvenes Adelante unlocks a radically more expansive future for the youth of San Miguel de Allende by easing financial barriers to higher education and by developing life and leadership skills.
