Day of the Dead Celebrations to Feature Visit by Coco’s Lead Voice Actor
By Jesús Aguado
The city’s events for Dia de los Muertos this year will include a familiar voice: that of Luis Ángel Gómez Jaramillo, the voice actor who had the lead role of “Miguel” in the Disney movie Coco, whose story centers on the traditional Mexican holiday.
Municipal Office of Culture and Traditions Director Paulina Cadena said that Gómez Jaramillo will join the crowds on Plaza de los Insurgentes for an event.
Cadena has integrated all the events in a logical way this year in order for spectators to get better enjoyment out of the holiday, she said. For example, all the parades this year are scheduled for November 1, and they will all follow the same route, leaving from calle Nueva del Parque to the San Juan de Dios neighborhood via calles Codo, Hernández Macías, Insurgentes, Quebrada, Callejón de los Muertos and San Antonio Abad, all ending up at either the town’s public cemetery or at the Plaza de los Insurgentes, on the corner of Canal and Hernández Macias.
The parades are being organized by preparatory schools except for one organized by the Office of Culture and Traditions and also the Catrinas Parade, which is organized by the Rosewood Hotel. It begins at the hotel at 8pm.
The Culture and Traditions Office has also set up an offering for San Miguel’s children to visit on October 31. Recently it also set up a display of floating candles in the San Juan de Dios Church fountain on calle San Antonio Abad, that pays homage to Japan. The Japanese ambassador to México attended the display’s opening.
Everything at the church related to the holiday will open officially on November 1 at 7:30pm.
On November 2, at 8pm, at Plaza de los Insurgentes, there will be music by Calaveras y Diablitos Orquestra. Gómez Jaramillo will join the band to sing some songs from Coco.
