Lions Guadalajara Trip
By Janice Finch
The International Lions Club of SMA is beginning the 2019-20 season with a four-day trip to Guadalajara.
We’ll leave on Thursday, October 24, from St Paul’s Church at 8 am. We will be staying at the Hotel Gamma, very near the historic center. There will be a walking tour upon arrival and a BYOB cocktail party the first night. The historic district includes a Cathedral built in 1558, the city hall, the government palace, a regional museum, the Museo de Cera, Teatro Degollado, the Palacio de Justicia, and the Instituto Cultural de Cabanas.
On Friday, the second day, the morning is free. In the afternoon, travelers will have the option to go to Tlaquepaque on our bus to have lunch at the Restaurante El Patio and see the female mariachis. There will be time for browsing and shopping.
On Sunday, the fourth day, the bus will go to Tonalà for shopping at their market, and then on to San Miguel. We plan to arrive in San Miguel at approximately 7:30.
Saturday will be a free day, with things to do on your own, such as the following:.
•The Herradura Express Train, 8:30am–8pm, is a trip to the Herradura distillery in Amatitan by train. Check herradura.com for info. It includes a tour of the distillery, drinks and food on the train. There will also be a fine comida, ballet folklorico and mariachis at the distillery—2800 pesos for the club car. It was well worth the price last year. You can make your reservation online at herradura.com, where there are other price options.
•The Jose Cuervo Express, 9am–8:30pm, is a one-way trip to Tequila by train and one way by bus. You can choose the morning or afternoon train. This tour does not include a meal but does include entertainment. The premium-plus car costs 2500 pesos. Go to mundocuervo.com for info and reservations.
•The Tres Mujeres Distillery excursion, 9am-6pm, travels by van or small bus. Try one of México’s few organic tequilas. This tour includes a visit to the town of Tequila for 500 pesos, lunch not included. If you want to reserve a space on this tour, you need to pay when you pay for the whole trip.
•The Guadalajara Zoo is one of the best in Latin America. Check zooguadalajara.com.mx to get details on this site. Admission is 85 pesos for adults.
The cost for the trip to Guadalajara is 3500 pesos per person, double occupancy and 5100 pesos for a single. This includes a first class bus, buffet breakfast each day, all tips and taxes, the BYOB cocktail party the first night, with food provided by the Lions Club. It also includes a donation to our organization, which distributes glasses to the needy and does diabetes testing at their clinic every Thursday morning. Payment in full for the trip must be in pesos. Time and place of payment will be provided when you register.
Itineraries will be handed out at that time. Seating on the bus is in order of email reservation to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please provide a phone number when you you’re your reservation.
