La Reseña Celebration a More Family-Friendly Taste of La Alborada

By Jesús Aguado

San Miguel’s longest and most important celebration of the year, the upcoming La Alborada festivities, is an extended offering of light in honor of the city’s patron saint, St Michael the Archangel.

However, prior to this yearly event, San Miguel annually holds what is essentially a preview or sort of a rehearsal for the Alborada. That event, which happens this year on September 20, has its own name—La Reseña (“the review”).

La Reseña: an alternative

For this reason, Mexican traditionalist Gloria Rodriguez Navarrete, founder of the Ballet Folklorico de San Miguel de Allende, decided some years ago that the city should do a rehearsal of the Alborada event in a way that children, elders, and people who don’t wish to stay up all night can enjoy it. This came to be called La Reseña.

On Friday, September 20, at 6pm, a loud skyrocket firecracker will be set off, signaling the start of Reseña festivities. To kick off this celebration, three parade contingents—one playing live music, one a procession of mojigangas, and one a procession of people holding giant rice paper stars with wooden bases and accompanying floats—will proceed separately from three of San Miguel’s oldest neighborhoods: La Estación, Valle del Maiz, and La Aurora. The three groups follow different paths. The one from the La Aurora neighborhood goes along calle Hidalgo. The Puente de Guanajuato group, representing La Estación, goes along Canal. The El Valle group goes along calle San Francisco.

All the groups meet at the intersection of these routes, at the corner of Canal and Hidalgo, before heading to the Parroquia. We will discuss the Reseña in our next issue.

The united procession will then circle the Jardín Principal three times. Finally, the cultural program of the year begins with the Ballet Folklorico de Chiapas putting on a special program.
