The 2019 San Miguel International Storytelling Festival concludes with three special final events: the “Stories in Spanish/Cuentos en Español” event, a solo performance by celebrated Irish storyteller Conor McAnally, and the best of San Miguel de Allende’s storytellers in the annual Showcase Finale.

Following a Spanish-language storytelling workshop led by storyteller and teacher Alonso Hernandez, the Festival presents an evening of stories in Spanish on Friday, September 27. Workshop students will join others to share stories of fantasy and life adventures for this free event in the Sala Literaria at Bellas Artes.

Irish performer Conor McAnally will present “Eagle and Harp: The Story of the San Patricio Battalion in the Mexican-American War.” The one-man show about the Irish-led corps of soldiers who left the US Army to fight alongside México will be at the Hotel Posada de la Aldea.

The San Patricio Battalion, celebrated in song, story, film, and books in Ireland and in México, fought bravely. The members are honored as national heroes of México. In many cities and towns here, the San Patricio Battalion is remembered on St. Patrick’s Day with a parade. A prominent statue of St Patrick covered with milagros and photos of loved ones honors the battalion here within the Parroquia.

A lifetime storyteller, McAnally brings to San Miguel the Irish tradition of the seanachai, storytellers who traveled Ireland, passing on the news, stories, traditions, myths, legends, and living history of the Irish people. From an acting family, McAnally has had a career as a radio and television journalist, a TV host, and an executive producer, director, and writer of award–winning television shows, as well as a multicamera music director for festivals like Texas’s Austin City Limits. Anally splits his time between Austin and County Galway, Ireland, the original home of John Riley, the San Patricio Battalion’s leader.

From the beginning of the Storytelling Festival, the Showcase Finale has been the most popular storytelling event of the year, presenting the best stories crafted and told throughout the festival events and workshops. Over the festival’s history, we have heard an incredible array of stories of adventures and daily comedies of life. Please join your storytelling friends and hear their true tales at the Storytelling Showcase Finale.
