Feline Sanctuary’s Monthly Gourmet Fundraiser Theme Is South Africa’s Big Cats

Big cats 2

By Marilyn Patterson.

On the heels of last month’s fundraising dinner and lecture on Transylvania and Romania, the cat sanctuary Santuario Felino Rey Ashoka, A.C will host a thematic evening of fundraising, this time devoted to the topic of South Africa’s big cats.

There are 10 species of African cats. Most know about the lion, leopard, and cheetah, but how about the caracal, the serval, the golden, the sand, the wildcat, the jungle, and the black-footed cat?
Acupuncturist, animal influencer, and cat lover Phaedra Barratt, who recently returned from two cheetah sanctuaries in South Africa, will talk about the cheetah, a large cat of the subfamily felinae that is native to northern, southern and eastern Africa, as well as a few localities in Iran. It inhabits a variety of mostly arid areas—dry and scrub forests and savannas.

Barratt will also address how Africans protect and poach endangered species and the moral dilemma of placing conservation over profits.

She did not return from her travels with any large cats. She has two Oriental shorthairs and her sweet tabby, Balam, who has a following on his own Instagram account.

Chefs Maye Cordova and Jimena Tamayo will prepare a full South African vegetarian menu of bhajias (gram flour dumplings), bunny chow (a bread bowl with chickpeas and curry), and Malva pudding with custard. Beers and wines from will be served. The amarula liqueur, will also be available for purchase.

This gourmet and cultural monthly fundraising event takes place on Aldama 9. All proceeds benefit Santuario Felino Rey Ashoka, A.C., a small cat sanctuary that has been open since September 2011.
