Parque Bicentenario Hosts Touring Exhibit of Tutankamon Artifacts Replicas

Tutankamon

By Jesús Aguado

The exhibit that has traveled México—Tutankamon, The Gold and the Spell—arrives at Parque Guanajuato Bicentenario in Silao on September 26, giving visitors the chance to appreciate more than 200 replicas of the 3,500 treasures and artifacts found in the sarcophagus of ancient Egypt’s famous boy emperor.

The tomb and its contents, discovered by Egyptologist Howard Carter in 1922, still fascinate people the world over today, not just because of its historic and mystical contents but also for the artifacts’ priceless value.

At this exhibition, endorsed by the National Autonomous University of México (UNAM), viewers will see replicas of funeral masks, the anthropomorphic designs that decorate Tutankamon’s sarcophagus, embalming tools, the tomb’s funeral chamber, a collection of ancient jewelry found in the tomb, and 15 pieces not found in the tomb but in keeping with the design of the era. These objects were made with gold, silver, copper, and precious stones by experts on the period.

“This is an opportunity for people to get closer to Egyptian culture. It will be unique,” said Carlos Domínguez Aguilar, Parque Guanajuato’s director.

“The eyes of the world will be on our state,” said Maricarmen Vela Escamilla, director of public relations at the state’s Secretariat of Tourism. “We are committed to actions that positively impact the creation of employment, attracting visitors, and revenue.”

The exhibition will be open Tuesday–Friday, 9am–6pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 10am–8pm. Admission is 25 pesos for adults. Children under 1.20 meters in height (3 feet, 9 inches) pay 10 pesos, as do senior citizens with an ID from the National Institute for the Elderly. Wednesdays are free for all.
