Shelter Theater Storytelling Event Celebrates a Year of Eclectic Stories

By John Wharton

Happy one-year anniversary to the city’s one and only storytelling series, the beloved Shelter Skelter Storytelling Extravaganza!

Since August of 2018, Shelter Theater continues to enjoy a harmonious collaboration with Shelter Skelter producer Leslie Beam. Time flies when you’re providing the town with interesting and eclectic short tales told by local and visiting storytellers almost every month.

Charm, compelling content, and a time limit of 10 minutes per story ensure a fast-moving, unique, and entertaining experience every time. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, Shelter Skelter is like a box of chocolates.

This Wednesday, September 11, at 3pm, promises to be another good one. What a lineup! First-time Shelter Skelter performers include filmmaker Scott Simmons—you’re just gonna have to attend to learn what that elephant did—Shelter Skelter house bandleader Doug Pulfer, the SMA Storytelling Festival’s Bobbi Van, Kirk Starkie, and Annabella Corro Gregersen. Returning storytellers include John Lea, Marjorie Burren, Alina Stallone, and Leslie Beam. And as a bonus, there’s live music by the talented Jaywalkers.

So mark your calendars, and come on out September 11 to the cozy Shelter Theater, where for an hour and a half, perhaps with popcorn and an adult beverage, you can escape the world and bask in new, unexpected entertainment. Buy tickets at the Biblioteca gift shop, Tesoros, and at our website.

Every Tuesday at 7pm: Open Mic. Come either as a performer as an audience member. If you want your 10 minutes of fame, then this is the place for you!

We have a different group of amateurs and professionals week by week, but there’s a camaraderie at these events that makes locals call it the “Cheers Bar” of San Miguel. You can do almost anything you want for your 10 minutes. Audience members pay 80 pesos admission. Performers pay 60 pesos. Both prices include a complimentary drink.

Visit for our map, event listings, and online tickets. Send ticketing questions and comments to You do not need to print your online tickets, just tell us your name when you arrive at the event. Advance tickets are not available for films or the Open Mic. Find our logo on the Que Pasa map in the upper left-hand corner.
