September is a month of fiestas: On September 15, we celebrate the Mexican independence holiday, and then on September 29, our Patron Saint, the Archangel St Michael. But there are other traditions in town as well, ones that celebrate pre-Hispanic culture.

One of these traditions is the choosing of the Queen of Patriotic Festivities and the Queen of the Rural Communities. The Queen of the Rural Communities has already been chosen on August 25 at the Plaza Cívica. On Sunday, September 1 at 7pm in Plaza Cívica, five women will compete to be the Queen of Patriotic Festivities, representing the urban area of San Miguel.

The titles come with privileges, such as accompanying the mayor at the balcony of the Ignacio Allende house in the Jardín on September 15 while he gives the traditional Cry of Independence in celebration of Independence Day. The queens also head parades, do public appearances, and participate in all kinds of local social, cultural and educational events.

During the event to choose the Queen of the Rural Communities competitors proudly wore typical attire of their communities, did traditional dancing, and shared with the audience their history and culture. The event also featured tenor voices and mariachi music, and ended with the crowning of Margarita Cruz from Corral de Piedras de Arriba as queen.

The Queen of Patriotic Celebrations will be chosen Sunday, September 1. There, the competitors will show off culturally based skills and will have to answer questions. The event will feature live music, folkloric dances and other surprises.

If there is rain, the venue will move to the Ángela Peralta Theater.
