Local youth lowering violence within their neighborhoods

Many in San Miguel support a growing, innovative program called Ranchero Pandillero in which ex-gang members and others work together to lower violence in local neighbors. This program is affiliated with CASA (www.casa.org.mx), is run in a professional manner and is having important impact.

For example, the Ranchero Pandillero team has been able to negociate truces and implement activities like soccer competitions, rap battles and art projects with members of distinct gangs. Ranchero Pandillero had its third annual peace festival this past week with more than 200 youth. There were no incidents involving conflict and distinct gangs pacifically enjoyed a long evening of art and music together.

Ranchero Pandillero work methodology includes a community assessment that is carried out with people of different ages. Through questionaires and home visits CASA learns what people believe; This data is tabulated and used to create interventions taking into account local imput.

In 2017 a questionaire was applied to 150 residents in Colonia San Luis Rey and again in 2018. The community gave their opinion that the problems related to gangs had diminished 20 percent over the year period that Ranchero Pandillero worked on a regular basis in their neighborhood.

The high number of unresolved homicides in 2019 in San Miguel de Allende is disturbing. Ranchero Pandillero is happy to report that no homicides have occurred in San Luis Rey or in the Colonia Allende, two neighborhoods where Ranchero Pandillero has been concentrating their efforts. CASA is trying to do closer work with the municipal government; there was a recent, productive meeting with representatives from various departments of the local government, including Seguridad Publica.

The business community is also supportive and the public is more than welcome to please join us at the lovely convention center La Casona on Thursday, September 5 from 6pm to 10pm for the opening of a photographic exhibit showing the many activities of Ranchero Pandillero. There will not only be photographs but young people will be there, displaying their art and more. This event is especially exciting because it is being sponsored in part by the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial de San Miguel, A.C. Local businesses are realizing that to have a secure environment for businesses to florish, we need to work together to provide the opportunities that young people, especially at-risk young people, need to move forward and become productive citizens.

Ranchero Pandillero`s reputation as a professional effective program is spreading. Mexico City government has sent to CASA youth members from a public program called Pilares to learn from the San Miguel youth and Senador Malu Micher has requested Ranchero Pandillero to work in Leon with the gang problem there.

Please join us at the Centro de Conventions La Casona – calle Josefina Orozco 2, Centro on Thrusday, September 5 from 6-10 pm. For more information in English or Spanish please email or call Isael Gonzalez, Director of Ranchero Pandillero – rancheropandillero@casa.org.mx, cell phone
