Early Identification is Life-changing for Autistic Children in San Miguel’s Communities

By Skip Essick

Childhood autism is a much more serious problem in the San Miguel de Allende community than many realize. Many children with autism and their families live in outlying communities. And, as is often the case, parents do not recognize autism as the cause of their children’s problems.

Niños con Autismo was started in 2014 with the mission of early identification and educational, therapeutic, and nutritional support for children with autism. Now in 2019, Niños con Autismo has successfully grown to the point where it has opened a therapy center dedicated to helping children with autism in the San Miguel area. Sabrina de J Vergara Calderón, whose specialty is in neurolinguistics with a subspecialty in autism, heads the center.

Since it’s critical to identify these children as soon as possible and get them the help they need, Niños con Autismo is partnering with Patronato Pro Niños to help identify those in the community who might have this disability. The Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende is very excited to present members of the board of directors along with their director as they discuss the important work they are doing not only for the children but for their families and the community.

Our speakers will include Rocio Puig, who is a real estate broker with KW Realty. She has a teenage son with autism and understands firsthand the needs of these children. Also speaking is Tais Gonzales, a relatively new citizen of San Miguel who came here from Veracruz. She is the owner of a boutique hotel in Centro called Hotel Naré and also serves on the board of Niños con Autismo.

Please join us and learn more about this important topic on Tuesday, August 27. We’re located at Los Arcos on Stirling Dickinson, next to the yellow caboose. Doors open at 9am, club business is handled at 9:30am, and our speaker takes the stage at 10am.

Rotary is where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change. For more information, contact President Gary Peterson at
