The Secretaría de Seguridad Pública (Department of Public Security), through the Dirección de Protección Civil (Department of Civil Protection), carried out a fire drill in the pet shop Petco, located in La Luciernaga mall. The result was positive, giying the business a rating as a safe establishment.
The drill, was done in cooperation with La Luciernaga’s security personnel, the Red Cross, and the San Miguel Fire Department. During the drill, eight people and three pets were evacuated.
The simulation evaluated the participation level of the employees, judging it against previously established protocol for such a situation. The amount of time it took Petco personnel to evacuate was monitored, as was the emergency personnel’s response time.
“The drill went very well. There was good participation from the employees and the customers,” said Civil Protection Director Josafat Enriquez. “They’ve had a very good response from the businesses to do good drills here in the municipality.”
To complete the drill, Civil Protection evaluated how well established protocol was followed before, during and after the simulated emergency, as well as how long it took for store personnel to return to normal activities. Afterwards, officials met to discuss possible improvements and how to optimize responses in a real-life emergency situation.
