Evening of Transylvanian Dining Will Raise Money for Feline Shelter

By Berkana Uruz

Back by popular demand, chef and owner of Garambullo Fonda Gourmet, Maye Cordova, is again in the kitchen, teaming up with Buon Forno owners Pedro Escamilla and Ornella Chiavoni.

Why? Our last Thematic Evening on July 18—a cultural and gastronomic tour of Rome that included stories about cats—was a sold-out event. Guests drank fine wines from the region and feasted on exquisite Italian cuisine. We left people wanting more, so off we go this month to Transylvania, Romania. Get on board!

Transylvania is home to some of Europe’s best-preserved medieval towns. Tiny shops offer antiques and fine handmade products by local artisans and artists. Visitors will also encounter stunning castles such as Bran, near Brasov—a Gothic fairytale structure often associated with fifteenth-century Walachian Prince Vlad Tepes, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Cordova will prepare an authentic Romanian dinner inspired by recipes from the ancestors of Ioana Kirculescu, from Transylvania, and Tamara Liuba Ariton, from Bucharest. These ladies will transport you to this land of mystery and magic and explain how cats play a part in Romania’s folklore.

Transylvania’s multiethnic heritage, which also includes those of Germany and Hungary, is delightfully apparent in its folk costumes, architecture, cuisine, music, and festivals. Kirculescu and Liuba Ariton are members of the Asociación de la Comunidad Rumana en México and will have an exhibit of paintings and photos from Romania on display, as well as a table with souvenirs and special spirits from Transylvania, called “Tuica” in Romanian, available for purchase.

Your participation guarantees that Santuario Felino Rey Ashoka, AC, founded in September 2011, can continue to rescue, house, feed, sterilize, provide veterinary care, and adopt cats from San Miguel into forever homes—possibly even Romanian homes.

Be aware of next month’s theme: “Big Cats and More in South Africa”
