Countertenor Don Krim Teams Up With Celebrated Cuban Pianist at Concert at Bellas Artes

By Tina Bueche

Don Krim

Don Krim is a standout musical star in San Miguel, a town with no shortage of fine musicians. A countertenor, that rarest of voices, he is a performer whose natural vocal range, without falsetto, is that of a mezzo-soprano. Krim’s voice is “gorgeous,” says Spanish conductor José María Moreno, who adds, “It is a voice that transmits, so expressive, displaying so much musicality.”

Grace Bumbry, one of the Metropolitan Opera’s greatest stars, heard Krim sing at a church in Salzburg and immediately invited him to coach her students in Berlin. “An extraordinary talent,” she says of Krim.

On Thursday, August 15, at 7pm, Krim teams up for the first time with pianist Fidel Leal, described by Artecubano as “one of the most important Cuban pianists of his generation.”

The two musicians will perform in the Miguel Malo Auditorium on the second floor of the Bellas Artes. The concerts are part of the Steinway Series, benefit concerts for Libros para Todos, a nonprofit organization that seeks to inspire children in México to read more, particularly those residing in rural communities where access to books is limited.

Krim, who is also a trained actor, has delighted San Miguel with his theatrical performances, in plays such as The 39 Steps, The Tricky Part, and The Odd Couple. His acting ability is an important added feature to his performances as a singer, because the repertoire he has chosen is dramatic and stirring. Krim will be singing Robert Schumann’s song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben from a collection of poems written in 1830 by Adelbert von Chamisso. The poems depict a woman recalling, in first-person narrative, her love for her man, from first meeting through marriage and death.

Krim will also perform selections from Steven Mark Kohn’s American Folk Songs. Kohn composed his song series between 2000 and 2006, looking for lyrics of less-familiar folk tunes from the American canon, which he reset to his own music. He says he chose poems “with a strong story and some sort of dramatic weight or humor.”

Krim will also sing spirituals and Spanish and Latin American songs.

All tickets for both concerts are for reserved seats. They are on sale at Boleto City, located at Mercado Sano, Ancha de San Antonio 123, Monday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm. You can also buy tickets online at boletocity.com or at Bellas Artes one hour before each performance. Tickets at the door must be paid for in cash only.
