Acclaimed Violinist David Mendoza’s Upcoming Concert Is a Musical Collaboration

By Ellie Harold

After a month-long tour of Canada that included a week at the annual Montreal International Jazz Festival, violinist David Mendoza is back in San Miguel de Allende for a concert at Paprika Restaurant on August 13, this time joined by local pianist Lorelei Capell.

Lorelei Capell

Originally from Chicago, Capell taught piano at De Paul University, presented weekly concerts at the Art Institute of Chicago, and was a pianist with the Chicago Symphony Percussion Ensemble. She also worked as a pianist on the Queen Elizabeth II. She came to live in San Miguel in 2012 and currently is the music director for the Community Church of San Miguel.

David Mendoza

A virtuoso multi-instrumentalist from México City, where he trained, Mendoza is best known for his expressive playing and the way he touches souls and heals people with his music.

He has played with several musicians in San Miguel and México City, including the Grammy nominee Michal Hoppè, who describes Mendoza’s playing as “wonderfully expressive violin,” quite simply “one of the most beautiful sounds one can hear in San Miguel de Allende.”

Mendoza describes Capell as a virtuosic classical performer.

“Lorelei is outstanding in following and taking care of the soloist player,” he says. “She is perfect in her musical thinking and playing.”

Capell describes Mendoza as “a highly professional, consummate” musician. “It is a total pleasure to work with him!” she says.

Mendoza and Capell first performed together at Mendoza’s birthday concert at Paprika in December 2018. They went on to share the stage at a sold-out concert at Teatro Ángela Peralta in March. At the August 13 concert, Capell and Mendoza will offer a variety of musical styles. Their program will include the music of Ennio Morricone, Ludovico Einaudi, Yann Tiersen, and Joe Hisaishi. They will also perform selections from Mendoza’s newly released album of original compositions, Birds Fly In.

Tickets are on sale now at Paprika, priced at 400 pesos in advance and 450 pesos at the door. Spaces are limited. For more information, call the restaurant at 415 152 4373, or send a message via Facebook Messenger to paprikarestaurantesma.
