The Alexander Technique: a Path to Better Posture and Better Health

By Pablo Buniak

We often translate situations of emotional conflict into muscular tension. In the same way, an abdominal pain may be caused by a psychological issue, and very often freeing up a contracted muscle can relieve emotional tension. This is because the body and mind interact as part of the same psychophysical entity.

It is for this reason that the Alexander Technique is often described as a psychophysical re-education method, oriented to increase awareness of habitual patterns of physical tension, posture, and movement that gradually lead to a misuse of ourselves that affects our daily life functioning.

An Alexander Technique teacher uses contact of the hands to help detect harmful habits in order to create new experiences and possibilities of movement.

The technique is a way of achieving physical freedom of movement; eliminating pain; preventing injury; reducing stress; improving posture, breathing, and use of the voice; and, above all, creating new healthy habits to maximize performance of any activity or profession.

A world-famous method for enhancing posture, health, and well-being, this technique helps relieve pain and tension by teaching how the body is designed and how it is meant to move with efficiency, flexibility, and ease.

Who can benefit from the Alexander Technique?

Whatever the activity we do, we all can benefit from re-educating the patterns of use that interfere with our daily professional performance or other everyday activities. This includes sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, using the computer and cell phone, driving a car, practicing a sport, playing a musical instrument, or singing, just to name a few. In every activity we perform, we have the possibility to re-educate those harmful habits and find new possibilities to move freely, without tension and without stress.

The technique is also well known in the performing arts field. It is taught at The Royal Music Academy and at The Julliard School, among others.

How to learn the Alexander Technique?

This educational process can be learned by taking one-on-one regular private lessons with a certified Alexander teacher, who communicates the principles of the method through verbal instruction and gentle touch. Teacher and student work together to bring about change. There are only seven certified teachers in México, including myself, recently settled in San Miguel de Allende.
