Dear Editor:

As longtime residents of San Miguel de Allende, we are accustomed to seeing things go wrong in our fair city. First, it was the extreme focus on wealthier tourists and fancy hotels to accommodate them. And now, we have a BIG “security” problem and lots of killings that one local politician recently told us to keep quiet about…lest we discourage tourism.

And now we have a Canadian mining company that apparently has received all required government permissions and access to huge amounts of water from our overly taxed aquifer. If this company is allowed to start mining, they will seriously pollute the aquifer and fill our air with toxic dust from the mining operations.

That, folks, is very bad news. That’s the air we breathe and water that we drink. The basics. I’ve been hearing about the mining company for some time. I blame the “people in power.” They are so focused on more development, more tourism, with no attention given to degradation of the land, inadequate safe water supplies, inadequate sanitary sewerage treatment, traffic, security, and the like. It is a huge problem. Their beloved tourists know about the killings and other problems and are starting to think twice before coming to San Miguel.

To all of those in power, please wake up and change your ways. You are “killing the goose that laid the golden egg” and slowly killing everything else that is sweet and good about this place.

W. Peters
