Twenty aspiring presidential candidates will face off in Detroit over the course of two nights. Americans around the world will tune in, hoping to find their winner. Democrats Abroad San Miguel de Allende is providing a way to do so surrounded by fellow onlookers.

Once again, members of the community have the opportunity to watch the upcoming televised Democratic debate, on July 30 and 31, on the big screen at the San Miguel Playhouse. Democrats Abroad is sponsoring this free event.

“We had such a great time at the Playhouse [for the first debate] in June, clapping, cheering, and being together as the candidates went head-to-head. We are thrilled to again be able to host anyone interested in learning more about the Democratic candidates at this great venue,” said Democrats Abroad Executive Committee Member Barbara Erickson.

The second scheduled debate will be hosted by CNN with journalists Dana Bash, Don Lemon, and Jake Tapper moderating. Qualifications for the debate are the same as the first: A candidate could qualify by either hitting just one percent in three separate polls released between January and a cutoff point before the second debate; by raising money from at least 65,000 unique donors; or, to ensure at least some geographic spread of support, by having at least 200 donors each in 20 states.

What will be different this month is which candidates will match up onstage. Candidates will be chosen for each night in a live drawing on July 18.

Democrats Abroad SMA member Andrea Kaufman wonders, “Can the people find a champion?” while Gary Belkin reminds attendees, “Not only will you be participating in the resurrection of American politics, but you can also have your picture taken.”

Admissions to the event is free, but secure your spot early, because the last event sold out days before the debate. There will be a cash bar available and snacks for purchase. RSVP at events or email

Democrats Abroad is the official arm of the Democratic Party for millions of Americans living outside the United States. We strive to provide Americans abroad a Democratic voice in our government and elect Democratic candidates by mobilizing the overseas vote. Locally, we support our membership and mission by helping US citizens living abroad to stay informed and to exercise their right to vote.

Getting out the vote of a broad Democratic coalition is an important goal of the organization. All are welcome at this event!
