OccupySMA Screens Videos about Two Female Indian Activists

By Georgeann Johnson

On Monday, July 22, at 1pm, Occupy Wall St SMA will show films featuring two of the most well-known women from India, Vandana Shiva and Arundhati Roy.

Vandana Shiva is a scholar, physicist, and activist who is well-known for fighting for food sovereignty. She founded Navdanya, (“Nine Seeds,”) to preserve original seeds from the earthly rape and pillage and patents of multinational corporations. She has written many books, her most recent The Oneness vs. the 1%.

“We are one humanity, and we need to live in that consciousness,” she says. “And “the 1 percent are turning the world into a war zone. My life’s work is to keep seeds free.”

The film is a short and powerful statement linking the earthly problems of climate change and food sovereignty with the power of international corporations, patents, and genetic engineering. She links boll weevils, BT cotton, insane royalties to Monsanto, farmer suicides, and lawsuits with laws trying to prevent farmers from saving seeds, to cotton seed banks, to indigo dye, to the origins of Bayer aspirin and the pharmaceutical company’s production of the deadly gas used in the execution chambers of Nazi Germany. There are links here to Gandhi, to economic democracy, and to the spinning wheel.

Arundhati Roy, an author best known for her book The God of Small Things, was on the 2014 list of the 100 most influential people. She is also known for donating royalties from her books to human rights causes. This short film records an interview with Roy in which she reveals her inside look at Gandhi and his reputation. The interview became controversial because of her analysis of Gandhi. She praises the work of a relative unknown, B.K. Ambedroy, an Indian jurist, economist, and social reformer. This scholar inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against the social discrimination against untouchables.

These two films show two intelligent Indian women’s activism to address large world problems. These videos will be shown in the Quinta Loreto Hotel TV room. Everyone is invited to join in our discussions after the films. All our events are free.
