Jake’s Corner

By Marie Abercrombie

What a busy month this has been, with challenges and changes. But change seems to be what life is all about. So, I say hello again and hope you missed me as much as I have missed you.

First, I want to introduce you to my half-sister, String Bean. I know that is a strange name for a dog, but our Marie has fallen in love with her and named her after her favorite vegetable. String Bean is part beagle and part basset, but she is petite for the breeds. She has big brown eyes that might make you fall in love with her like I have.

She was living with Shakti Khan, the lady who adopted me at my graduation. We had a good life with her, but unfortunately just a few weeks after I got there, Shakti Khan passed away. String Bean came to live with Marie, and I now live with Patti until we can find loving new homes. We now get to play when Patti and Marie bring us together. My vocabulary is expanding, and now I understand words like crate, wait, move, and leave it. I’ve even learned to leave it when Patti puts my food dish on the floor. I wait patiently (which is the hardest part) until Patti says ok…then I gobble every bite. It tastes like steak tartar! I can wait when she puts a cookie down too, but that is harder.

We’re both eager to be with new foster boys, who are training us to be the best dogs we can be, with the help of professional trainer and our loving vet, Roxana. Do you know of anyone looking for a really great dog? We promise to be the very best, most loving four-legged friends you could ask for. As you know, it is a dog’s duty to practice acceptance and to give unconditional love to our humans. Our hearts are big and can give love to people, and it is our pleasure to make their lives better with our kisses and tail wags. Please help us find homes by contacting

Marie is excited to let everyone know that we have a new volunteer at the Heart to Heart program. Penny Ripple is our marketing and communications director. She is getting us more organized. She and our webmaster, Mike Bartlett, are working to improve our website. This will make it easier for our friends to stay in touch and to donate their time and some pesos to keep Heart to Heart moving forward. Our biggest challenge is to find loving homes for us, so if you know of anyone, please contact us at Thanks for reading my July article, and we’ll talk (and bark) again next month.
