From Wiesenthal to Deconstructing O

By Alan Jordan

Yes, I had great training at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. Yes, I studied with the renowned acting teacher Sanford Meisner. Yes, I’ve been lucky enough to have experienced 50 years as a professional actor in Canada and the USA. So why am I a bundle of nerves and insecurities with each new show, especially the shows that I feel directly responsible for in San Miguel de Allende?

As an actor and director, I was taught that the learning process never ends and that to keep on top of one’s game one has to keep challenging oneself. Each play is different—the text, cast of actors, and designers are different. Therefore, it’s never “same old, same old.” My experience playing Simon Wiesenthal was so very much different than the character I’m playing today, Professor Duncan Joseph Manning III.

Finding parts of myself that I can discover and utilize as each different character is energizing and sometimes very revealing to myself. Since presenting plays for Caja Negra in San Miguel, I’ve been lucky enough to play a man on the edge of sanity in HOUSE, a German transvestite hero during World War II in I Am My Own Wife; a very put-upon, love-struck, low-level Russian worker in Diary Of A Madman; and now an effete professor of education whose whole life is being threatened in Deconstructing O—all highly dramatic characters and all a challenge.

I thank San Miguel’s astute theatergoers for allowing me to push the envelope and adapt and create productions that reflect today’s mores and issues and also incorporate the Mexican experience. After all, in our version of An Act of God, which will be reprised again in November, heaven was México…it is for many of us.

As of today, Friday, there are only three more presentations of Deconstructing O: tonight at 7pm and Saturday and Sunday at 3pm.

Reservations can be made online by contacting Shelter Theater at sheltervg4.com or by email at sheltervg4@gmail.com
