Feed the Hungry San Miguel Kicks Off Its Back to School Campaign

By Paola Juarez and Donna Fullerton

Very few people reading this sentence know true hunger. Perhaps we’ve skipped a meal to lose weight or missed a meal because of a meeting, but for most of us it is a foreign feeling to want food and not be able to have it simply because we could not afford it.

For example, La Palmilla is one of the poorest rural communities served by Feed the Hungry (FTH). We have been operating a school kitchen there since 2008, yet 30 percent of the school-aged children are underweight and 7 percent are severely underweight. Because this remote community has little access to nutritious food, the meals provided by FTH are critically important. For many of the children, it is their only wholesome meal of the day.

In addition to food, FTH provides education to ensure long-term results. This year, three nutrition workshops and two cooking classes were conducted for the mothers of La Palmilla.

“The fact that we are not only getting the food, but that they are teaching us how to make it at home and make the vegetables taste good for our kids, is more than we could ever ask for,” said Evelia Martinez, a mother of three.

In August, nearly 5,000 students that receive a daily hot meal from Feed the Hungry will be back in school. Our volunteers will be at full speed packing and delivering food to 36 schools and seven charities, because in some schools, we now serve two meals daily. And our new Pre-Kinder Nutrition Program was introduced in two schools in 2019; the program’s goal is to provide nutrition to toddlers and minimize the number of severely underweight children who start kindergarten already malnourished.

Won’t you help us welcome these students back to school and ensure they can continue to receive the nutrition they need to grow and thrive? US, Mexican, and Canadian donations are tax-deductible. US and Mexican donors can donate online at Canadians can donate online at (from their dropdown menu, select Feed the Hungry as your charity of choice).
