Centro Infantil de los Ángeles Celebrates 20 Years with an Alumni Reunion

GRADUATION

By Lee Daneker

On a recent Saturday afternoon, 39 graduates of the Centro Infantil de los Ángeles preschool gathered for a reunion at their old preschool building in Colonia Providencia.

Centro Infantil is a San Miguel de Allende NGO that provides free, high-quality daycare and preschool education to children from the most financially challenged families in San Miguel de Allende, México.

The preschool, formerly known as Centro Infantil San Pablo, has existed informally for over 20 years and as a formally certified preschool since 2008, when it moved into its own building with the assistance of St Paul’s church. Since its founding, over 200 children have graduated from Centro Infantil and gone on to excel in primary school and beyond.

The 39 graduates in attendance ranged in ages from 6 to 19 years. Many of the younger graduates attend the Niños Heroes primary school on nearby Avenida Independencia. The oldest graduate currently attends the Nacional Technological University of México Celaya campus, where she is majoring in chemical engineering. Of the 39 attendees, 22 have siblings or cousins in preschool at Centro Infantil.

At the reunion, the graduates enjoyed food, music, dancing, and games. The most popular game was “Numbers.” The graduates divided into teams, each child had a number, and when Director Patricia Palacios Cortes called a complex number, for example “1,203,” team members rushed to organize themselves to be the first to display the number called. Everyone received a small prize for their participation.

In a survey designed to elicit information about their experience at the Centro Infantil preschool, the graduates were asked, “What was the best thing about your preschool experience?” The most frequent answer was, “las maestras” (the teachers).” This was not surprising considering the quality of the faculty, all certified teachers.

Centro Infantil de Los Ángeles is free to its students and is supported by donations and grants. To learn more, please visit the website: www.centroinfantil.org.
