Everardo Vargas, 22, was killed on July 7 around the area of Avenida las Americas and Paseo de los Conspiradores in Fraccionamiento Ignacio Ramírez, in a drive-by shooting that also resulted in two other deaths and three injuries, all of bystanders who were at a taco stand nearby.

Ximena Morales, 13, died while receiving medical attention and was buried on Monday. Elena Ugalde also died in the shooting. The Red Cross took the three injured victims, all unnamed women, to various hospitals.

The Guanajuato Attorney General’s Office made a public statement on July 8, releasing information slowly to the public. According to authorities, the incident began after midnight, when an armed gunman in a Chevy Tahoe truck began chasing Vargas and firing shots in the area. Residents of upper San Miguel heard the gunshots around midnight and reported them to 911.

In a press release, the local government expressed condolences to the women’s family and assured that they will openly work with federal and state authorities to solve the crime. They also remarked in the release that they will work to bring the “peace and tranquility” that Sanmiguelenses seek and deserve.

The condolences were criticized by Sanmiguelenses, who demanded actions to prevent crimes like this.
