Deconstructing O Asks the Tough Questions Inherent in David Mamet’s Oleanna

By Alan Jordan

Caja Negra’s Deconstructing O premieres this coming Thursday, July 11, at Shelter Theater. This controversial play stars Ivette Pizarro and Alan Jordan and is codirected by C. Baumgartner.

Actress Ivette Pizarro, starring as Norma Sylvia Rodriguez, was born in México City. Her Cuban father was a renowned psychoanalyst. She grew up surrounded by artists, most notably her aunt, Marga López, a well-known actress from Mexican cinema’s La Epoca de Oro (The Golden Age), and Manuel López Ramos, a famous classical guitarist. On her Mexican mother’s side of the family, almost everyone was an artist. She lived among musicians, visual artists, sculptors, and people involved in cinema. She studied psychological realism at the Russian School of Performance in México and graduated with a grado de excelencia (grade of excellence).

Pizarro last performed in Long Day’s Journey into Night at the San Miguel Playhouse. She is set to star in Death and the Maiden for Caja Negra in February 2020.

Baumgartner, Deconstructing O’s codirector, was born in Caracas, Venezuela. In México City, he studied acting at El Foro Teatro Contemporáneo, directed by the National Arts Award winner, Ludwig Margules. He also studied with master acting teacher Tito Vasconcelos.

In 2007, he moved to San Miguel de Allende and joined Gravityworks Aerial Acrobatic Company. At Microteatro San Miguel, he produced and directed eight works.

Baumgartner has directed several projects in rural and private schools, including La Nina Que Riega la Albahaca y el Principe Pregunton by Gabriel García Lorca. As a director, his main stage productions include major works at Bellas Artes, Teatro Ángela Peralta, and the San Miguel Playhouse. Many of Baumgartner’s dramatic circus creations have premiered at the Ángela Peralta Theater.

As an actor, Baumgartner was last seen on stage as Molina in Kiss of The Spider Woman.

His next circus teatro show, Ay Corazón, will premiere in San Miguel.

His next theater appearance will be in the upcoming Death and the Maiden for Caja Negra in February 2020.

And then there’s me, Alan Jordan. I get to work with these two creative professionals. And, yes, I’m playing the Professor. This adaptation of the play Oleanna updates the story to 2019. Today the issue of sexual harassment has changed dramatically thanks to the bravery of many who speak out. But has that power gone too far? That is one of the questions asked by this play. Both characters have so much at stake and everything to lose.

As with all our productions, we appreciate the loyalty of our local audience and visitors.

Our past productions include House, Diary of a Madman, I Am My Own Wife, By the Waters of Babylon, The Tricky Part, Building the Wall, Kiss of the Spider Woman, An Act of God, and Wiesenthal.
