“Wild Food Adventures” Highlights San Miguel’s High-Quality Food Options

In April, Audubon de México launched a series of monthly outings and events that we’re calling Wild Food Adventures. The connection between food and Audubon stems from our work in helping San Miguel de Allende become a sustainable community and teaching children about gardening through our Niños y Naturaleza program. Audubon de México is committed to celebrating and preserving our healthy environment and quality of life.

Where our food comes from and how it is grown affects our health and environment as well as the economy. San Miguel is fortunate to have a growing list of local farmers and producers of everything from vegetables, meats, olive oils, and cheeses, to artisanal wines and beers. Each month you’re invited to join us in a new adventure to meet these producers and learn, explore, and savor the culinary bounty of San Miguel.

At our April launch event, we gathered for a delicious sneak preview of local organic food advocate Donnie Masterton’s Fatima 7 restaurant, located on the rooftop of the Casa Blanca 7 Hotel. Chef JJ Castañeda talked about his commitment to using local foods, which started 20 years ago in California, as over 90 of us indulged in his savory offerings and sipped delicious wines from Viñedo San Miguel.

Our June adventure was another sold-out event hosted by Victor Gutierrez and Susan Chamberlin at their organic olive farm, Luna Finca Serena. Gutierrez educated us on olives and olive oil production and Chamberlin, an olive oil sommelier, oversaw our delicious multicourse feast that incorporates their olive products into every dish, from appetizers to desserts.

Our next Wild Food Adventure will be on Tuesday, July 16. We’ll be venturing out into the countryside, where five talented and imaginative chefs will collaborate on a comida featuring summer harvest ingredients, using several open-fire cooking techniques. You’ll meet Mariano Alvarez, proprietor of Buenos Aires Bistro, an expert in open-fire cooking, Donnie Masterton of The Restaurant, Greta Ortega of Mivida; Olivier DeBoise of Aperi, and JJ Castañeda of Fatima 7, all members of our Silvestre Wild team. (More details about Silvestre Wild will be coming soon.) They are all are excited to take part in this unforgettable afternoon.

The August Audubon food adventure will be an “Eggstravaganza” brunch at Zumo Restaurant, celebrating several types of deliciously prepared eggs (from quail to turkey!). In September, Chef Magda Elisa Pablos will host a culinary adventure of Chilis y Chocolate at the beautiful and serene Casa de los Leones B&B in Atascadero.
