International Jazz and Blues Festival Puts on Three Extra Concerts

By Tere Urtusástegui

The twenty-fifth edition of the International Jazz and Blues Festival of San Miguel de Allende will present additional concerts during the month of June at three different venues. The first in this series, on Friday, June 14, at the Ángela Peralta Theater, “Blues & Rock Ladies,” will feature the music of Bessie Smith, Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner, and others. The public response to the Festival’s last concert, “Soul Divas,” prompted organizers to invite singers Maria Piedra and Aurora Nunez, both of whom performed at the “Soul Divas” concert, to appear. Accompanying Piedra and Nunez will be outstanding musicians Patricio Peña on keys, Felipe Muñoz on guitar, Poli Olvaz on drums, and musical director Antonio Lozoya on bass. Buy your tickets at the theater box office and online through PayPal via the festival’s website.

The second concert in this series happens Saturday, June 22, at St Paul’s Church, featuring Gabriel Hernández on piano, Sebastian Voegler on drums, and Antonio Lozoya on double bass. Collectively the trio is known as the Hernandez/Voegler/Lozoya Jazz Trio. Buy tickets for this event at Solutions, Recreo 11, and online through PayPal via the festival’s website.

The final installment in this series, on Friday, June 28, will bring guitarists from the legendary blues singer Maria Muldaur’s band. On their own, they call themselves The Craig Caffall Blues Band. Their performance, at the Miguel Malo Auditorium in Bellas Artes, will be dedicated to blues legends Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Buy tickets for this event in person at the Bellas Artes cafeteria and online through PayPal via the festival’s website.

In other news, mark your calendar. In November, the Festival goes multimedia, celebrating five consecutive days of jazz and blues with concerts, a film series, workshops, master classes, jam sessions, and more. It’s all happening November 13–17. Also, the Festival is happy to announce that from now on, it will present extraordinary concerts every month.
