Vatican to Reopen Holy Staircase Where Jesus Walked

A staircase that is said to have been walked upon by Jesus before his judgment by Pontius Pilate will soon be on display for the first time in 300 years. The Vatican has been restoring the Scala Sancta, as the marble, 28-step stairway is called, for the last year. It has been covered with wooden planks since 1723.

The restored staircase will open on June 9.

Some believe the staircase has been stained with drops of Christ’s blood, thus making it a holy site for many pilgrims who ascend the steps on their knees. They kiss the blood-stained spots which are covered by medieval crosses on the planks of wood.

The restoration project also features newly-restored fresco walls and ceilings.

Celebrity Reveals New Galapagos Ship

As Celebrity Cruises gears up for the debut of its Flora, the first ship specifically designed to sail the Galapagos, the cruise line revealed that the ship’s godmother will be an Ecuadorian conservationist, Yolanda Kakabadse.

Kakabadse is the former president of the World Wildlife Fund and Minister of Environment for the Republic of Ecuador. She will christen Flora on June 30, in the Galapagos.

Flora will be equipped with oceanographic research equipment that will allow scientists from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science to conduct research onboard.

The 100-guest ship will join the line’s other expedition ship, Xpedition, and will sail from Baltra year-round. The vessel will make her first sailing on June 30, alternating seven-night inner and outer loop itineraries, with a selection of 10-, 11-, and 16-night packages.

The cutting-edge ship will feature Celebrity’s signature outward-facing design concept, giving guests 360-degree views of the islands, and all-suite accommodations. Flora will also have the first glamping experience at sea, new dining venues, an open-air stargazing platform, expert-led ecological seminars, and custom-designed Novurania yacht tenders who create a seamless sea-to-shore experience for guests.

DFW, World’s Largest Airport, Achieves Carbon-Neutral Status

For the past decade, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport has been steadfastly focused on reducing its environmental impact, in the process improving operational efficiency and cutting costs.

The Texas airport’s efforts have been woven throughout all levels of operations, encompassing waste management, energy usage, water consumption, and far more, all of which has begun to pay off on multiple levels.

Perhaps most notable among the achievements listed, DFW has become a carbon-neutral airport, making it the largest airport in the world to receive this distinction, as well as the first in North America.

Despite naysayers who often suggest that such environmental efforts represent a costlier way to do business, the airport’s economic vitality has benefited from these sustainability programs.
