Atención All Around Us: Where to Buy Our Newspaper
Subhead: Death of Salomón González Ends a Newspaper-Selling Family Dynasty
By Jesús Aguado
Atención’s history of being sold in the Jardín Principal is a longstanding one, shepherded for a remarkable 43 years by various members of the same family. However, this history recently came to an abrupt and indefinite pause with the passing of Salomón González Ramírez, 81, last month. He was the last González family member to sell Atención at this central location.
Perhaps even better known for doing this job was the man who did it before him—Salomón’s son Bernabé “El Támbula” González Silva.
Bernabé was a legend among Sanmiguelenses who bought Atención and other papers and magazines from him for 32 years. They all knew the distinctive bass voice he used to hawk papers at volumes reaching the entire Jardín. Bernabé died in 2017 at age 52.
When Bernabé died, Bernabé’s wife, Adela, took on the job for a while, but then Salomón took her place and continued on at the post until last month. Our deepest condolences go out to the González family.
After Salomón’s recent death, those who daily bought papers from him like Excélsior, Reforma, El Sol del Bajío, Correo—and, of course, Atención San Miguel—were confused at the disappearance of Salomón’s familiar newspaper stand in the Jardín. However, Atención can still be found all over the city: from El Charco del Ingenio to Bové restaurant, from El Vergel bistro to Fabrica la Aurora.
Our readers who used to get Atención at the Jardín can still find it at these nearby locations:
