We’re all storytellers, and the stories we tell point to the heart of human nature. Come enjoy a night of discovery and music with us on May 10 as the professional and amateur storytellers of San Miguel share their personal stories. According to producer Leslie Beam, participating in or listening to stories is actually good for us!

Unwind and dream, relax and listen to fun stories well told!  Physical exercise, healthy eating, and even the unglamorous taking care of business chores are stimulating and essential, but by nature include overtones of “go go go” and “do do do.” So why not make a conscious decision to electronically unplug and spiritually and artistically recharge by savoring others’ spoken word—that’s right—stories! Come to Shelter Skelter, relax in the dark cocoon-like environment of our intimate theater (perhaps with a glass of wine) and, for an hour or so, with no job whatsoever, just listen to magical tales and enjoy.

Each month, the Shelter Skelter Storytelling Extravaganza features eight new wonderful, eclectic, even magical offerings, uncommonly delivered by local tale spinners. The May 10 show features two well-known SMA historians and educators: tour guide Joseph Toone and SMA Mask Museum proprietor Heidi Levasseur. They both are brilliant and charming folks, whose job happens to be to speak, entertain, and keep listeners interested every day. Tickets available at the Biblioteca gift shop and online at www.sheltervg4.com.

Friday, May 3, at 5pm: Don’t miss your chance to see Leonard Cohen himself on our big screen performing in the film Live in London! Says the Chicago Tribune about one of Canada’s greatest musical talents, “His songs were always beautiful, but here, in his later years, the elements of the melodies which were always present have been lovingly teased out.” All his hits, up close and very personal.

Every Tuesday at 7pm: Open Mic. You don’t need to perform, but if you want your 10 minutes of fame, then this is the place for you! It’s a different group of amateurs and professionals week by week. You can do almost anything you want for 10 minutes. Admission is 80 pesos for the audience and 60 pesos for performers (includes a drink).

Shelter Theater is an easy 10-minute walk down from the Jardín! Visit www.sheltervg4.com for our map, events, and online tickets. Send questions and comments to sheltervg4@gmail.com. Find our logo on the Que Pasa map in the upper-left-hand corner.
