La Grotta Italian food, Celebrates 30 Delicious Years
By Esther Ramírez
Just one block behind the Parroquia you will find a cozy restaurant that has served delicious Italian food to San Miguel de Allende, as well as to countless visitors from all over México and from around the world, for 30 years!
Simple and rustic, with food prepared to order, La Grotta is a place where time is suspended, where customers cannot help but believe themselves to be in an osteria somewhere in Italy! Situated in an old building in the Historic Center, La Grotta represents the essence of an unhurried San Miguel.
Daniel Ramírez and his team are known for their fresh pasta prepared daily, the thin-crust pizza with ingredients that can be combined suiting everyone’s taste, specialties such as the all-time favorite rollo espinagrotta, as well as Daniel’s signature desserts.
Throughout the last 30 years, several generations have come and gone through the restaurant’s doors. La Grotta has helped couples celebrate their engagement and then received them again later with their children. And so on and on!
This family business opened its doors on May 1, 1989, with Javier Romano. In April 1995, Daniel and me embarked on this adventure and became the owners of what was one of their favorite restaurants—Daniel in the kitchen, sharing with his cooks the art of seasoning, and me in the evening, washing dishes after closing my store Talisman. It has been and still is an ongoing journey and always a learning experience. Our son Dyami and his wife Cynthia are enthusiastically taking on the family mantle with La Grotta Delivery (based in colonia San Antonio) and La Grotta a la Leña (on the road to Querétaro) while Daniel and Esther continue to be the heart of the original location.
The Ramirez family is very grateful to everyone who has been supportive. Thank you, San Miguel, for helping us create a place where everyone is welcome to enjoy a delicious meal.
