In keeping with their policy of bringing groundbreaking art to San Miguel de Allende, the Galeria Intersección presents on May 4 the work of two outstanding contemporary artists, Sioban O’Donoghue and Larimer Richards.

In spite of her name, O’Donoghue is Mexican. One of the country’s foremost artists, she creates work much in the spirit of the late Joseph Cornell, but with a strong bent towards female power and national strength. Her fantastically designed Mexican Toy series was quickly grabbed up by FAO Schwarz, the renowned toy store on New York’s Fifth Avenue. Items in the series included a large can containing all the materials for a child to build a Mexican kitchen, and a Ferris wheel.

Her Within the Magic Eye exhibit is a delight for the attentive eye, as O’Donoghue’s boxes and display cases are generally made of objets trouvés—old dolls or doll pieces; beautiful ribbons, marbles, and balls; Fornasetti photos; a glass-encased sneaker with ribbons and tiny balls; or dangling antique keys in place of piano keys. Descriptions don’t do the work justice; it must be seen. She plays with desire and memory in the most enticing way.

On the heels of a highly successful show in the United States, O’Donoghue has created new original work specifically for this exhibition.

Larimer Richards’s Just Sayin’… exhibit plays with nature. His art is also made of a treasure trove, but it plays hand-in-hand with what the good earth supplies: discarded, sun-dried bee combs; and dried moss and dogwood are married to the artist’s technical skills, which, combined, give us a set of dream fixtures resembling lit-up fireflies.

In truth, this tall, lanky cowboy is a romanticist, using nature’s discards to create his installations. Accompanying this work is an old country credenza stuffed with huge roses made from Panama hats, an art piece in itself. Each rose is signed by the artist and is available individually. Richards shows us his sculpting skills by presenting a magnificently sculpted piece of bronze armor in a stunning green patina which, upon close inspection, reveals a matrix composed of skillfully distributed condoms. Tongue in cheek without a doubt, but nonetheless an important work of art.
