Opera San Miguel Ends Season on a High Note

By Shari Alexander

With the recent Concurso San Miguel Winners Concert, Opera San Miguel (OSM) brought its extraordinary 2019 season to a close. This eleventh season represented a giant leap forward for Opera San Miguel and the remarkable young singers it is discovering and developing.

Each of the 2019 events was sold-out, and the quality of music was at an all-time high. The Concurso awarded more than 750,000 pesos in career grants and performing opportunities; two competition invitations; plus three full scholarships for advanced study: at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Alberta; at the Highlands Opera Centre in Ontario; and at the Conservatory Liceo in Barcelona, Spain.

The jury for this year’s Concurso represented nearly 200 years of professional opera experience at the highest international level, with its winners appearing in a sold-out concert. After the concert, OSM was inundated with congratulatory emails

In the brief history of Concurso San Miguel, its winners have achieved a level of international success that was unheard of just 10 years ago. Concurso winners are studying on full scholarships in the finest opera training programs in the world—five at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and six at Placido Domingo’s training program in Spain—and singing at the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, the New Orleans Opera, and the Opera Quebec. They are also performing in Barcelona, Valencia, Basel, Innsbruck, Hannover, Lubeck, Regensburg, Naples, Bologna, Amsterdam, Bahrain, and Moscow, as well as in the Salzburg and Taormina festivals.

The work OSM is doing on behalf of young Mexican singers is only possible through the generosity of local businesses and the OSM’s Angels of the Opera. Concurso San Miguel remains the only independent contest in the nation that is one-hundred-percent supported by private donations. But it is far more than just a contest. Once singers have become prize winners, OSM and its artistic director John Bills follow and cultivate their careers with continuing professional mentoring. These mentors open doors for them in opera companies and training programs around the world.

To become a part of this vital and unique project on behalf of Mexico’s most gifted young singers, OSM hopes you will consider becoming an Angel of Opera San Miguel. Angels receive two complimentary tickets for Concurso XII on Saturday, February 29, 2020; two complimentary invitations to the annual Angel Gala Dinner and Concert; preferred seating for all OSM concerts; and exclusive invitations to attend master classes and first-round auditions. Higher levels of support receive additional benefits. But most of all, Angels receive the pride and satisfaction that comes with knowing they are truly changing lives and helping to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of the remarkable young artists Opera San Miguel is discovering.
