Heart to Heart Program to Celebrate Its First Dog Graduate with “Tea-and-Tacos” Party

By Marie Abercrombie

Hey there, it’s me, Jake. I am beginning to get excited and maybe a bit nervous. Change is coming, and that is good, I’m sure, but also a bit scary.

I have been working hard at Casa Hogar with my trainers, Tomas Duarte and Alida Ruiz, and with my human pal and trainer-in-training, Leonel, a resident here who is learning to train me as a life skill. He could maybe get a job doing this! Meanwhile, I benefit because a trained dog is more adoptable, or so they tell me.

Speaking of training, I know most of my commands on the first or second instruction, but at graduation—that’s right, I said graduation—I am going to have to be perfect. So far, that hasn’t happened. Work, work, work, focus, focus, focus—geez!

Speaking of graduation, the time is getting near. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 8, from 4–6pm. We are calling it “Tea and Tacos.” That’s right, all-you-can-eat tacos and tea. And I will perform my commands for you.

Where, you ask, will this be happening? That will be decided by the humans in the next few days.

The cost is a 250-peso donation to help us put two more dogs into Casa Hogar’s girl’s orphanage. I hope when you come, you will eat a little on the sloppy side so I can gobble up all the droppings. Do we have a deal?

At graduation, I will be auctioned off to the happy family that really wants me. Could that be you? I hope so. You will also get to meet the dogs that are going to the girls’ home, Pam and Sam. These two dogs are brother and sister. Their owner passed away a few weeks ago, and there is no room at the Sociedad Protectora de Animales (SPA) for them. As a street dog, I was prepared for that life, but these two have never been street dogs; they wouldn’t have a clue.

Thank goodness that Heart to Heart was willing to foster them and put them into the program as soon as possible. So they are going to join us for graduation! Please join us and meet all three of us at this event. A fun time will be had by all.
