Dear Editor:

I recently published some articles with Atención and was happy that I did. A lot of people at UU and elsewhere saw them and said kind words.

I published the article below [U1] in LA Progressive, but I would like very much to publish it (or something very much like it) in Atención. Many people do not realize that Medicare for All does not mean Americans who live outside the US. Several years ago, there was a strong movement to change this. There still is a movement in the Philippines. Bernie Sanders did not try to amend Medicare to apply it to those of us in México—although he has said this when asked if he would support an amendment to the Medicare law permitting Americans to use Medicare benefits to pay for health care in approved medical facilities outside the US:

“I support a Medicare-for-all single-payer health care plan to make health care a right, not a privilege, for all Americans, including Americans living and working abroad. Instead of spending federal health-care dollars on the multimillion dollar salaries of insurance company CEOs, it is time to use this money to guarantee health care to every American citizen.”

As you know, retired US military personnel and their dependents living overseas are reimbursed by the US government for most of their medical bills through the TriCare For Life system. In my view, there is no reason why we cannot use the Tricare program as a model for a Medicare delivery program for all Americans living overseas.

If you are interested in this subject, I’m sure that LA Progressive would let you publish the article below.[U2] I know the publisher very well.

Michael T. Hertz

[U1]>Tania, do you know what article below he is referring to? Are we going to publish the article he is referring to? If not, we should take references to this out here and later on  in the letter.

If we’re not going to publish some article along with this letter, then I’ll look at this again on Monday and adjust it if you want.

[U2]Tania, what “article below>” is he referring to?
