UNESCO Announces Plans for a Club in Playa del Carmen

Officials with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have announced that they will be opening a club in Playa del Carmen.

According to the Riviera Maya News, UNESCO wants to have representation in the state of Quintana Roo that combines the efforts of the local government with nongovernmental organizations looking to improve México.

Local officials were told that UNESCO wants to take ideas and innovations to young people, especially in troubled areas like Villas del Sol in Playa del Carmen. With cultural, educational, and recreational options, they will have more chances to succeed.

WOW Air Ceases Operations, Cancels All Flights

Iceland’s low-cost carrier WOW Air has ceased operations and canceled all flights.

The budget airline made the announcement March 28, posting a statement to its website that declared the “end of operation of WOW Air.” It advised passengers in light of the news to book new flights with other airlines that may be offering a reduced rate, so-called rescue fares.

WOW added that those who made bookings by credit card or via a European travel agent should try to get their money back through those businesses. It said some passengers may be entitled to compensation from the airline itself.

The news caught passengers by surprise. Travelers in Newark were told their flight was canceled after a four-hour delay.

After WOW Air’s planned merger with rival carrier Icelandair fell through, a US private equity firm that controls Frontier Airlines and Indigo Partners had arranged an agreement in principle to take a stake in the carrier. WOW had taken steps to cut costs, ending service to several US cities. WOW had also previously said it would cut one-fifth of its 20-plane fleet, returning the jets to their lessors.

Launched in 2012, WOW Air operated service between Europe, Iceland, and the US with fares under US$200 and extra charges for seat selection, baggage, leg room, and refreshments. But the carrier ran into pitfalls like frequent delays and rising customer complaints.

New 4,000 Mile Bike Trail from Coast to Coast

Grab your helmet, and set out for the great outdoors. But instead of opting for a classic summer road trip, you’ll soon be able to try out something a little more challenging—like biking across the mainland United States.

It’s soon going to be easier than ever. According to Lonely Planet, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) has announced a cross-country, multiuse trail, known as The Great American Rail Trail. It will run across 12 states. The nearly 4,000-mile trail will begin in Washington, DC and end in Washington State, attaching to several gateway trails such as Capital Crescent Trail, Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, the Panhandle Trail, the Hennepin Canal Parkway, the Casper Rail Trail, and Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail.

While the idea for this trail began 30 years ago, the RTC has spent the last 18 months researching 34,000 miles of US pathways and collaborating with state agencies and local trail partners to create a comprehensive plan.

The project itself will take years to complete. At the moment, only 50 percent of the work is finished. However, the RTC plans to release full route information by spring 2019.

Once complete, the trail will be a completely seamless path for off-road bikers and hikers, According to Lonely Planet, it should “serve more than 50 million people within 50 miles of the route.”

It will certainly be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the US. More information about the trail can be found on the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy website.

Words of the Wise and Well-traveled
