NGO’s Birth Control Distribution Program Makes Headway in San Miguel Neighborhoods

By Guadalupe Apoderado

If you’ve ever been to New York City, you’ve probably seen advertisements featuring the city’s well-known condom program.

The condoms are free and are part of a New York City Department of Health campaign to prevent teen pregnancies and lower the rates of sexually transmitted diseases. The condoms are distributed at more than 30,000 New York City locations, including clinics, shops, and schools.

Adolescent pregnancy is a public health crisis worldwide, and San Miguel de Allende is no exception to that crisis. According to Martín Milán López, Director of the Sanitary Jurisdiction II in the municipality of San Miguel de Allende, adolescent pregnancies in many San Miguel communities correspond closely to the national average of 22.5 percent of the total number of pregnancies.

The “Family Planning/Bodegas de Planificación Familiar” model of the Centro para Adolescentes de San Miguel de Allende (CASA), through its Community Health Program, seeks to reduce adolescent pregnancy rates and prevent sexually transmitted infections in San Miguel. Various condom-dispensing locations have been established in corner stores, Internet cafes, papelerias, and tattoo shops. Both male and female condoms are provided, as well as the Morning After pill. There is no cost to the adolescent, and the location owners are trained in providing sexual and reproductive health education. Currently, there are family planning dispensary locations in many colonias of San Miguel de Allende, including Allende, Adolfo López Mateos, Insurgentes, Centro, San Luis Rey, and La Cieneguita.

Around 33,660 condoms were distributed in 2018 by the Community Health Program, consisting of a youthful outreach community staff (Program Coordinator Ivon Lanas Lopez and her staff, Melisa Echeverria and Alma Guadalupe Rojas), who worked in 19 rural villages and four marginal neighborhoods.
