As we approach Easter Sunday, there are few observances in the events leading up to Easter that are more special in San Miguel de Allende than Semana Santa, or Holy Week. Few people are as knowledgeable about the week’s multitude of observances as local author Charlotte Bell.

A video featuring Bell’s lecture on Semana Santa is the next Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel presentation, on April 9 at Cafeteria Sanmiguelessen. Because Bell has other commitments in the United States this month and cannot be in San Miguel, she has produced this video presentation for Midday Rotary. It will be the only Charlotte Bell Semana Santa presentation in town this year.

Over the years, Bell’s lecture and slide presentation on this topic has become well-known for completely covering all the information you need to observe Santa Semana celebrations in context.

“People come from all over México and the world to experience Semana Santa in San Miguel,” says Bell. “Countless processions and other unique occurrences happen during this time. Many of the events are ancient and have historical significance, but without information they are just strange occurrences.

“In this presentation, you will learn about San Miguel’s very own saint maker, the late Genero Almanza. I will tell you about the storeroom of angels for the Procession of Santo Enterro on Good Friday. You will learn about Padre Felipe Neri de Alfaro, who built the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, who would walk barefoot seven miles into San Miguel while carrying a heavy cross on Good Friday.”

Following the presentation, Bell’s book, Tears from the Crown of Thorns, will be available for sale. The book contains photographs, history, and information about this special week in the city.

Cafeteria Sanmiguelessen is located at Stirling Dickinson 28, next to the yellow caboose. Doors open at 9am with an optional breakfast for 100 pesos. The presentation will begin at 9:30am and is free.

Rotary is where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change. For more information, contact President Ivar Schacke at
