Shelter Theater Interviews There and Back’s Playwright, Raúl Garza

There and Back - Raul Garza

By John Wharton

Written by noted Austin playwright, Raúl Garza, the play There and Back is the shared story of those who go illegally to the US. To help understand their life of fear, we interviewed Garza about his groundbreaking new play:

Shelter: What motivated you to write this powerful story?

Raul Garza: I’ve been friends with “illegals” in my hometown of Austin for years. The immediate impetus for the play is recent government actions and our need to defend the human rights that define our country.

Shelter: Why have your Mexican premiere in San Miguel de Allende?

Raul Garza: This is a great topic for a town full of Americans sensitive to what immigrants experience as they seek that “shining city upon a hill.” I knew San Miguel audiences would welcome our message.

Critics agree. The play is powerful. Austin 360 calls it “a very human narrative about one woman’s struggle to live a simple life of human dignity in a country that continually tries to rob her of it.”

There and Back plays Thursday through Sunday, Apr 4–7. Tickets are available at the Biblioteca gift shop and online at

Friday, April 12 at 5pm: Shelter proudly presents a film of the London production of Arthur Miller’s epic All My Sons, the story of American greed gone awry.
