Noted journalist Laura Carlsen returns to San Miguel de Allende to analyze the first four months of México’s new government.

Since taking office December 1, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (often referred to as AMLO) has been introducing sweeping changes, turning the country away from the neoliberal model of the last four presidents. While some of this is controversial, AMLO enjoys an unprecedented 80 percent favorability rating in the polls. The electoral victory that brought him and his Morena Party to power (AMLO carried every state except Guanajuato) gave him a mandate to turn the country in a new direction.

He has criticized the four past presidents for corruption and their neoliberal policies. He canceled construction of the new México City airport. He has cancelled mining in Baja California. He is promoting a Mayan train in Yucatán to open up the area for development and tourism. He plans to build a new refinery. He has initiated a sweeping scholarship program for Mexican youth. He is establishing a new National Guard to combat corruption. And he has attacked gasoline theft, as we are well aware of here in San Miguel. Yet, all that is only a partial list.

So how is he doing? México City journalist Laura Carlsen will assess what AMLO has done and where he is headed. Her Americas Program is a major source of news and commentary on México and Latin America for English readers (www.americas.org). Her print and broadcast reportage has been featured by Democracy Now!, Pacifica Radio, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, the BBC, and CNN, and she is host of the weekly television show, Interviews from México. She is also a favorite speaker here in San Miguel.

In addition to her Saturday talk for Global Justice, she will also speak on Sunday to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Miguel de Allende.
