Deaf Students Selling High-End Handmade Items at Special Education School Sale

By Sharon Doherty

The older students of Escuela de Educación Especial de San Miguel de Allende (the San Miguel de Allende School for Special Education), known as EEESMA, will again be showcasing their handmade creations at a craft fair taking place at the school on April 3.

Several students of this school for the deaf have recently graduated from the middle school and high school and are now transitioning to the workplace. Key to this transition is putting to practical use the skills they have learned in the school’s vocational training workshops. Under expert instruction, these graduates have learned to create well-crafted artisan items. They proudly make these items available for sale to the public.

The students’ craftsmanship has continued to improve and has reached a high standard. You will marvel at their uniquely crafted silver jewelry. Along with many designs appealing to a wider audience, there are also pieces created especially for this year’s San Miguel Writers’ Conference. From the carpentry workshop, there are beautifully made wine racks, artist’s easels, and end-grain cutting boards. Many of these wooden items are now being supplied to local businesses. And from the sewing workshop, there are useful quilted casserole carriers, fabric shopping bags, and embroidered and embellished denim jackets, a debut item at the fair that the students themselves will model in a mini-fashion show.

The price of admission goes toward your purchases. All items are reasonably priced. Proceeds will benefit the school, helping sustain its vocational training programs and providing an income to the graduating students.

We invite you to support EEESMA students in their goal to become self-sufficient and productive citizens of their community. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to find unique, one-of-a-kind gifts for yourself or for the special people in your life.
