Casa Hogar’s Heart to Heart Program Looking for Foster Homes for Trainee Dogs

Hi there! It’s me, Jake, the dog that won the lottery!

Can you even imagine living on a cold, damp street one day and then on the next ending up at a school full of boys to play with every day? I live in heaven on earth at Casa Hogar. Leonel walks me, plays with me, feeds me, and even picks up my poop. He is learning a lot about responsibility, about caring for another living creature (although I am a very cute creature), and about what it takes to have something else in your life. I think he really likes me, and I know I really like him.

The days have finally gotten warm enough to be outside most of the day. I count the minutes as best I can—my watch is not working—until Leonel gets home from school. The nuns here check on me from time to time, but when I get a glimpse of Leonel coming into our room, I start bouncing up and down, saying, “You’re home! What’s up for us today?” He always gives me a big smile and picks me up. What a guy!

We have learned several commands so far. We do—or should I say, I do—the commands sit, come, and heel. I am still working on focus. Maybe once I am really trained, I could work on that yellow butterfly that comes to all our lessons.

Oh, I remember now why I’m here: I wanted to tell you that Heart to Heart, the program that got me to Casa Hogar in the first place, is looking for some foster homes for a few of my furry friends that need to leave the streets and eventually come to Casa Hogar or maybe Santa Julia, the home for girls in San Miguel de Allende. For Heart to Heart to grow and work with dogs and children, they must have dogs checked by Dr Merrill and have all veterinarian issues cleared, then wait to be placed. This could take between five to 10 weeks. If you would like to help us out with this part of the program, call Marie at 152 3383 or Patti at 152 1702.

Sabrina, a wonderful lady, took in a brother of mine who was left behind after his owner moved. He is a beautiful small lab with a lot of freckles. She has renamed him a few times but has settled on the name Scout. She has already fallen in love with him, so Heart to Heart may not get him back. What a wonderful world!

Bark at you next week.
