The 10-Minute International Play Festival Opens to Great Success

By Kate Rowland

The Diez Minutos Festival 2019 is up and running. This 10-minute play festival has proven to be one of the most popular theatre events of the year in San Miguel de Allende.

The Actors Theatre of Louisville’s 1977 Humana Festival invented the 10-minute play format. Since then, this dynamic and challenging form, which some call “the American theater’s haiku,” has been embraced worldwide.

An entertaining aspect of the Diez Minutos Festival is that audience members get to vote for their favorite play out of the seven plays performed. In addition, for the first time this year, there will be a “Diez Minutos Cofounders Award,” given by the cofounders of the Diez Minutos Festival, Mark Saunders and Michael Hager, to the most deserving play in this year’s lineup.

The following is a look at this year’s picks, and a bit about our very special playwrights:

Beatrix Potter Must Die by Patrick Gabridge (Brookline, MA): Gabridge has had short plays staged in theatres around the world. He’s also the author of four novels.

Exceeding the Purchasable Calories by Rhea MacCallum (Downey, CA): MacCallum is an award-winning playwright, screenwriter, and script consultant whose plays have been produced worldwide.

Location Location Location by Rich Orloff (New York, NY): Orloff has written over 80 short plays, which have had over 1,800 productions on six of the seven continents—and a staged reading in Antarctica. Last year, Diez Minutos presented his short play, I Was Fine Until You Came Into the Room.

God on The Couch by Dan O’Day (Northridge, CA): Beginning at age 25, O’Day wrote and published a monthly comedy service subscribed to by radio personalities around the world. Since 1987, he has personally coached radio personalities and morning shows in 37 countries.

When You Wish Upon A Star by Marilyn Bullivant (San Miguel de Allende): Bullivant  has been writing for the stage on and off since age 10. She has contributed to three San Miguel Playwrights’ Showcases and was featured in the 2018 San Miguel Writers’ Conference. She has performed her satirical skits in revues all over the planet.

Domestic Disturbance, by Hope Hommersand (River Forest, IL): Hommersand has had productions and readings of her plays around the US. She belongs to the Dramatists Guild and Actor’s Equity.

Poetry, Prose, and…Pirates!, by Ken Preuss (Oviedo, FL): Preuss is a Florida-based playwright and teacher. His 14 published one-act plays for teens and his assorted short plays have been produced worldwide and in 47 of the 50 United States.

The festival runs March 13–17 and March 20–24, on Wednesdays–Saturdays at 7pm and Sundays at 3pm, at the San Miguel Playhouse, Avenida Independencia 82. This is a Players Workshop production.
