Patronato Pro Niños Tour Volunteers a Diverse Bunch from All Walks of Life

By Cheryl Young

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, crowds of eager travelers queue up in front of the Parroquia, getting ready to start their journey through San Miguel de Allende’s past.

And who is leading that journey? It might be a retired educator, artist, librarian, geologist, engineer, bank executive, educator, or lawyer. These volunteers are the tour guides and greeters of Patronato pro Niños (PPN).

Many are retired Americans. Some are Canadian “snowbirds” in San Miguel for the winter. All our guides have gone through extensive training, an “internship,” and trial runs for their 2.5-hour tour presentation, which is done in front of a live audience. Guides are encouraged to keep their knowledge up-to-date with extra reading and research. And all of them happily donate their time to PPN because they love introducing new people to our charmed city’s history and culture.

In Trip Advisor reviews (which tour guides read closely to find ways to improve), participants always praise our guides for their depth of knowledge, warmth, and friendliness. The tour guides’ stories about their own journey to San Miguel (why they came, why they stayed) make the tour even more interesting and relevant to those who might be thinking about making the move themselves.

A recent five-star Trip Advisor review summarizes well why these tours are so popular with visitors and residents: “There are two good reasons for choosing this tour: First, you get a tour from a knowledgeable, friendly guide that covers a great deal of the history and architecture of this beautiful old city. This was my first time in SMA, but I will definitely take this tour again the next time I am here. Second, the guides work for free, as the entire (very reasonable) cost of the tour is a donation to Patronato Pro Niños, a local organization providing medical assistance to the neediest children of San Miguel. Cost on 2/4/2019 was 300 pesos.”

This spring, the greeters and guides invite you to share their passion for the city by taking the Historical Tour, offered since 1992, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning.

One hundred percent of the tour donations and tips go to support PPN’s important work.

For 49 years, this nonprofit organization has provided necessary psychological, medical, and dental services to San Miguel children whose families cannot afford to provide it for them. In 2018, we served 7,636 children; that is more than 600 per month!

All tours are in English. No reservations are needed, but if you are bringing a group of five or more, we would appreciate prior notice. Contact Christina at 415 152 7796 or at Private tours can be arranged.
