The local government has announced that construction will begin in May on 3,000 affordable homes in the new planned neighborhood, Lomas de San Miguel.

This ground-breaking date is behind the previously announced date of October 2018.

The planned community will be one of the biggest neighborhoods in town, and will be the most populated, with up to 25,000 residents expected. Plans for the community include dedicated schools, a church, a mall, and recreational centers.

The construction site is located on the road to Los Rodríguez. Officials plan to complete the project in 10 years.

From the early planning stages, government officials have made clear that the homes will be meant for workers of modest incomes—vendors, taxi drivers, cashiers, farmers, and civil servants. The minimum income requirement for prospective buyers is 208 pesos per day, they said. Each house will cost 200,000 pesos. Buyers will have access to credit from federal and state loan programs, as well as from private financial institutions, with 10 years to pay back the loan, according to officials.

Plans unveiled at the housing development’s formal presentation to the public in June 2018, showed one- and three-family homes and duplexes. City officials at that time remarked that the project was conveniently located “close to local, state, and federal offices as well as to the university section of town, the Bicentennial Park, the general hospital, and the city’s industrial zone.”
