Renaissance Hotels Makes its México Debut

Renaissance Hotels announced the opening of Renaissance Cancun Resort & Marina, the brand’s first hotel to open in México.

The resort anchors the new marina in Puerto Cancún and connects travelers to both the local spirit of the neighborhood and the destination’s pristine beaches—just minutes away.

The 180-room lifestyle resort is poised to anchor Puerto Cancún—home to a professional golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf, residential areas, and a shopping center with restaurants, movie theaters, and the largest marina in the area.

The hotel’s design takes a decidedly distinct approach to Mayan mythology, inspired by the journey a soul takes after death through the cenotes to reach the mystical underworld of Xibalba. The Renaissance brand offers a sense of clever theatricality and an invitation to experience something a little different through its whimsical design.

The hotel boasts 180 guestrooms, including 11 suites, all with ocean, marina, or golf-course views.

Conveniently located 10 minutes from the city and 25 minutes from Cancún International Airport, the new Renaissance Cancún Resort & Marina is located in Puerto Cancún, an exclusive and gated community at the beginning of the hotel zone, only steps away from the beach. Opening rates begin at US$250 per night.

Belugas, Bears and Blooms

Thinking about some northern exposure this summer? Three special land-based expeditions (with boat trips) offer views of beluga whales in Hudson Bay and polar bears near Churchill, Manitoba.

During July and August, beluga whales migrate into the warm shallow waters of the Churchill River near Churchill to give birth. Viewing hundreds of the adorable white whales by boat is an experience you’ll never forget.

The trip also includes an exploration of the Churchill Wildlife Management Area by tundra buggy, with a chance to spot and photograph many species of northern wildlife—and perhaps even an opportunity to see the first of the summer polar bears as they migrate into the area.

The expeditions start and finish in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Groups are kept to a maximum size of 22. The required fitness level is “light.” The 2019 departures dates are: July 18–23, August 8–13, and August 21–26. From US$3,682 per person + 9 percent tax.

Dine at the Popes’ Palace

Rhône river cruise guests will be greeted by brightly colored lavender fields, plentiful vineyards, ancient Roman ruins, and idyllic French villages. In between the pastoral countryside you’ll discover the picturesque cities of Lyon and Avignon, as well as the iconic wine region of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. People and places along the Rhône have contributed to some of the world’s most significant artistic, culinary, and cultural movements.

On this excursion in the south of France, you will arrive at the medieval Popes’ Palace in Avignon just as the doors are closing to the public. The exclusive after-hours classical concert and gala dinner is part of the itinerary on a Scenic cruise along the Rhône. You’ll be welcomed with champagne before taking your seat in the huge banqueting hall where the French popes would have entertained nobility 700 years ago.

Enjoy all-inclusive luxury, exclusively with Scenic. With Scenic, there are no hidden extras; you can afford to leave your wallet at home.

South of France: 13-day cruise between Lyon and Marseille, from July 29 to August 10, 2019, in a standard suite, costs US$8,190 per person.

Words of the Wise and Well-traveled

“And then there is the most dangerous risk of all—the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.” ¾Randy Komisar
