Trainee Jake the Dog Making Progress at Casa Hogar Boys’ Home

Life at Casa Hogar

By Marie Abercrombie and Jake

Hey there, it’s me, Jake, again. Have you been missing me? I have been missing you. Life at Casa Hogar with my pal Leonel has been joyful. Birds and butterflies hover over my head, singing and fluttering, all happy sounds as spring begins to spread. Gosh, I almost sound like a poet. What do you think?

One of my classes this week was canceled because Alida Ruiz, one of my trainers, was sick. I hope she is better next week because I like her. She is helping me with focus. Now that is an entirely new concept.

I think I might have that human problem, Attention Deficit Disorder. I am working hard at better listening skills. When Alida or Leonel says my name, I need to stop, look, and listen—because something is coming soon after, then followed by a treat. Oh, how I love those treats.

There I go again, thinking about the treat instead of the “focus” part. Well, I am sure I will get the hang of it with a few more treats. I jump around in circles, but what fun.

I have made plenty of friends here at Casa Hogar. There are several boys here, and I think they would make great, gentle, and kind trainers. I don’t want to jinx anything by telling you who I am thinking about, but there are several friends of Leonel who seem interested in trying out the Heart to Heart program, which trains residents like Leonel to train dogs like me, to give them a sense of purpose and a possible career path.

Leonel’s friends watch both of us while we are in class. Keep your human fingers crossed that my canine brothers and sisters will have a chance at this life that has come my way. No way to cross my paws, so I’m depending on you.

Oh, I almost forgot: leashes are important. I wish I didn’t have to have one so I could run everywhere I want, but I know that the leash keeps me safe from traffic and a lot more. The leash also keeps others safe as well. I would never bite—never! But not everybody knows that.

I guess that’s enough for today. Got to get back to homework. Please look at more pictures on our website, And remember, two hearts are mended when they are befriended.
